Collab’ing with AI
In developing These Makeshift Idiotika (TMI), I’ve chosen to explore the full gamut of possibilities with AI. I fully recognize that the use of AI in creative fields, including writing, illustration, sound design, and coding, is a subject of ongoing ethical discussion.
I will continue to participate in these important conversations and advocate for the rights of my fellow artists. I want to see a future where creators and AI can collaborate effectively and ethically. In fact, I’ve already seen so many glimpses of it.
That said, my personal approach is to work with AI. The line between where my creative input ends and AI’s assistance begins may not always be distinct, but while AI helps me explore and refine my ideas, the core concepts, emotional resonance, and narrative direction are all driven by me.
Even without the help of AI, I’ve been writing, composing, acting, painting, and coding for many years. There’s no part of TMI that is solely AI-generated. I’m using AI to enhance those existing skills, bringing to life something at a scale and quality that would have been impossible for me alone.
Of course, we could get into another discussion: the one that says AI is mostly a regurgitation of all the gobs of human data that were fed into it. I do believe this to be true, and I also value AI all the more because of this. After all, I’m similarly indebted to all my friends and family for regurgitating knowledge and mama-birding me right from their beaks.
Anyway. I hope you can experience TMI as a cohesive whole, and that this little experiment of human creativity plus the echoes of AI can give you something really special. I’ll always be exploring the new worlds of artistic expression.
All that said, please know that it’s okay if this game isn’t for you. I’m happy to issue you a refund if what you’ve found has left a bad taste in your mouth.
But for those of you who do enjoy what’s inside, I hope to hear from you, and I hope I’ve inspired you even just a little to journey towards the frontiers of your imagination.
